OK, guys, this one is for you. Did you spend this summer swimming with your shirt on? Are you embarrassed by your enlarged male breast tissue, or gynecomastia? If you’re self-conscious, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 40 to 60 percent of men will experience gynecomastia at some point in their lifetime. Dr. Peterson can help reduce and remove unwanted breast tissue to give you the chiseled chest of your dreams.
Frequently known as man boobs or “moobs,” gynecomastia is a condition in which the male breast tissue becomes enlarged. Weight gain can also cause male breast tissue to become bigger.
Gynecomastia can also be caused by hormonal imbalances. These imbalances often occur as a natural part of the aging process. Use of certain medications, like antidepressants and anti-ulcer medications, can also cause hormones to become out of whack. When testosterone is low and estrogen (yes, men do have estrogen) is high, the breasts start to get bigger.
The use of marijuana has also been linked to the development of gynecomastia, because the active ingredient of the plant, THC, triggers changes in users’ hormones.
What Do I Do About ‘Moobs’?
For some individuals, diet and exercise can reduce unwanted breast tissue. In cases of hormonal causes, gynecomastia may be reduced through testosterone therapy. For enlarged breast tissue caused by medications, talking to your doctor about switching to a prescription that does not negatively impact your hormones may help. And if you smoke pot, you should stop.
If your excess breast tissue is unresponsive to diet and exercise, hormone therapy and a medication change, schedule an appointment with Dr. Peterson to assess your chest and find out if you are a good candidate for a male breast reduction.
What Happens During the Male Breast Reduction Procedure?
During the male breast reduction procedure, Dr. Peterson will surgically remove your excess breast tissue, as well as any fat that may cause you to look like you have breasts. Extra skin may also be removed in some cases, as the enlarged breast tissue may have caused the skin to sag. The final result is a more toned appearance that you’ll want to show off.
Just a note, “moobs” can redevelop with weight gain, future hormone imbalances and marijuana use.
