Can Dermal Fillers Be Reversed?

Thinking about dermal filler injections to smooth out lines and wrinkles or restore sunken areas of your face? Or do you want to try fillers to boost your lip volume or contour your cheeks?

When administered by board-certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Peterson, dermal fillers can be an excellent and versatile way for men and women to reduce the signs of aging, but what if you go to a less qualified provider and don’t like what you see after getting your fillers?

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectables usually made with hyaluronic acid, calcium and collagen that are used to fill in lines and wrinkles in the face. Dermal fillers can also be used to replace lost facial fat volume that happens because of aging. Dr. Peterson offers many types of popular dermal fillers like Radiesse, Juvederm, Restalyne and Sculptra.

I Had Fillers Done, But I Don’t Love How They Look

If you do not like your new look after getting filler injections, don’t panic. It may take a few days or a few weeks to see the final results of your filler injections.

If you’ve waited a bit and still do not love your new look, call the doctor who performed your fillers. You may just require a minor adjustment here and there to get the look you want.

I Still Don’t Like Them. Now What?

If you are still unhappy after seeing your final results and getting adjustments, here are some other suggestions to improve results.

Massage. Gently massaging the treatment area can help reduce things like asymmetry or small lumps that can occur in some individuals.

Reversal. Not all fillers are reversible, but some hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers like Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero can be removed using a special enzyme known as hyaluronidase to correct issues such as:

  • Unsatisfactory results
  • Uneven results
  • Prolonged or excessive swelling

Wait. The effects of dermal fillers are temporary because the body metabolizes them over time. Depending on the product you received, results may last three months to one year. But, if you are experiencing pain, severe swelling and redness for an extended period, you may have an infection and need to seek medical care for treatment.

A Word of Advice

Before you go under the needle, do your research into your provider. It may be tempting to have fillers performed at the salon or local med spa, but you may end up with botched results, an injury or worse.
