Is Sunscreen Safe for the Environment?

We all care about the environment, and with people becoming conscious of their impact on the environment and how our daily lives affect it, it’s critical that we take the necessary steps to protect our local ecosystems by promoting healthy practices to ensure its survival. Unfortunately, not everyone is quite on the “environmentally friendly” bandwagon just yet. That is why one popular tourist destination is taking action in order to ensure that the environment remains healthy for future generations.

The coral reef in Key West, Florida, is a wondrous and breathtaking natural wonder to behold. Home to a diverse ecosystem of marine life, the barrier reef stretches over 100 miles along our sunny coastline. It’s critical that the health of the reef remains, not just for the creatures that dwell in it, but also for everyone to enjoy.

Key West sees a high volume of tourist every year, from snorkelers diving along its serene, cerulean blue waters to families kicking up sand along the coastline. Many of these tourists use a variety of sunscreen products – products that contain ingredients that could bring harm to the marine life that we share our ecosystem with. That is why Key West has taken some necessary steps lately to protect the amazing resources that exist there, such as banning sunscreens that contain the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, in order to ensure the health of this vast stretch of coral.

While the ban of these chemicals will go into effect on January 1, 2021, for those who are concerned about which sunscreen to use right now, there is a simple solution.

That solution is Colorescience, a non-chemical sunscreen product. Some sunscreen products that are not biodegradable contain harmful chemicals that promote damage to the reef, such as bleaching. Colorescience products do not contain these chemicals, such as oxybenzone or octinoxate, so if you’re concerned about the environment, you can rest assured that they won’t harm the ecosystem.

In fact, Colorescience offers a large array of products to choose from, including makeup-cleaning wipes to eye cream. Some of the products are scent-free, such as Sunforgettable Brush-on Sunscreen with an SPF of 30. There’s also the Total Eye 3-In-1 Renewal Therapy, which can be used to alleviate wrinkles while being delicate around your eyes.

So, if you want to protect your skin from the harmful radiation and make sure that what you’re using doesn’t cause harm to the local ecosystem, then use Colorescience.
