The Benefits of Using a Plastic Surgeon

Cosmetic surgeon. Plastic surgeon. Two things that mean the same thing, right? The two terms are often used interchangeably, and while most Americans would likely say, yes, they are the same, they actually are not the same thing at all. In fact, they are pretty different. Dr. Jack Peterson is a board-certified plastic surgeon. Find out how that sets him apart in this blog.

You Say Cosmetic, I Say Plastic

You may be saying “tomato, toMAHto. potato, paTAHto,” but really, there are several distinct differences to be aware of when seeking out a plastic surgeon. Before you call the whole thing off, here they are:

Focus. Plastic surgery is a discipline of medicine that helps to restore function and form to the face and body to correct flaws or dysfunction. So, while Dr. Peterson can perform a rhinoplasty procedure to correct an unwanted bump in the nose, he can also perform the procedure to correct a deviated septum that causes breathing issues. On the other hand, cosmetic surgery is solely focused on enhancing an individual’s appearance.

Education. Plastic surgeons go through rigorous undergraduate training and medical school and then through residency focused solely on plastic surgery. This means many years of education and training. Once they complete their residency, they can become certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Cosmetic surgeons go through undergraduate training and medical school and can become a cosmetic surgeon by completing certificate programs or continuing education courses, workshops or seminars. There are no specified plastic surgery residency requirements for cosmetic surgery, so even general practitioners or dentists can practice cosmetic surgery.

Board Certification. There is only one board certification in plastic surgery recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties and that is the board certification given by the ABPS. Why is this important? Because this exclusive certification is not just given to anyone; it is only given to those who have completed the educational and hands-on experience requirements necessary to be certified.
