Microdermabrasion Recovery Tips

Thinking about microdermabrasion as a way to rejuvenate your skin and erase blemishes, signs of sun damage, acne scars or large pores?Microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin using microcrystals to slough away dead, damaged and dull skin cells. Microdermabrasion is an excellent way to freshen your face and get great skin, but you can maximize your results with a few simple tips from Dr. Peterson to help you recover and see results quickly.

Chill Out. After your microdermabrasion treatment, your skin may feel irritated, as if you have a sunburn. While this feeling usually goes away within one to two days, you can feel better by applying an ice pack or splashing cool water on your skin.

Stay Moisturized. Using a moisturizer after your microdermabrasion treatment can help keep your skin comfortable and prevent it from drying out while you heal. Select a moisturizer designed for sensitive skin without fragrances or harsh ingredients that can further irritate your skin.

Skip Exfoliation. There is no need to exfoliate after microdermabrasion as microdermabrasion already exfoliates your skin. While you’re at it, you should also avoid toners, astringents and rubbing alcohol, as well as products with retinol, vitamin A, and alpha and beta hydroxy acids. These ingredients can irritate the skin further while you heal after your microdermabrasion treatment. You may also want to avoid wearing makeup for a few days as well.

Say No to the Sun. For the first two weeks after your microdermabrasion treatment, you should take great care to stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds. If you must be out in the sun, wear a hat and a broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30. Be sure to reapply regularly.

Don’t Peel. While it may be tempting to peel or rub off scabbing or flaking skin, you should absolutely avoid doing so to prevent scarring and infection. Peeling can also introduce oils to your newly revealed skin, which can cause blemishes.

In just a week or two after your microdermabrasion procedure, you will be able to show off your fresh new skin and resume your normal skin care routine. Want to learn more about microdermabrasion or how to care for your skin after your procedure? Call Dr. Peterson today at 785-234-9000.
